INSTRUCTOR

Biography

My name is Ron Fortier. I was born and grew up in this part of the country. I received my BFA from UMass Dartmouth when it was called SMU (Southeastern Massachusetts University). Going to school there opened the door for me to enter the University of Miami on a full scholarship and graduate with an MFA (Masters Degree in Fine Art).

I am a painter, an educator and an active artist. I've also taught art history for nearly twenty years, which in my opinion gives me perspective and keeps me grounded both in my own studio and in my drawing class. There hasn't been a time in my life where I didn't know that I wanted to be an artist. I can perhaps echo Picasso by saying that I didn't choose painting, it chose me. I am an abstractionist. To me, that means that I don't duplicate images from nature. Instead, I create subjective images. I prefer to think of my paintings as things, objects or icons, rather than representative of things.

My work is usually small and personal in scale but can occasionally be quite large. The one thing I hope the viewer gets from my artwork is to walk away with a sense of stillness or quietness. Perhaps so much so that they will bring the piece home with them. I believe it will change the area around which they will display it.

As for my teaching philosophy, I don't run a teacher-centered classroom. I employ more of a learner-centric method. In everyday English, that means that your education is delivered from your point-of-view (the learner-centric perspective). You are encouraged to take responsibility for your own development in order for you to gain confidence in your ability to learn. It also means you are expected to be totally involved in the learning process, and by doing so, have some fun while being an enthusiastic participant.
